About This Home
tropical modern, meet
tropical traditional
This home is what results when an award-winning homebuilder/developer and a world-traveled fine art aficionado build a private residence for themselves in Hawaii. Under the guidance of architect, Jim Schmit, interior designer, Diane Cleave, and lighting designer, Rob Billingsley, this home was erected just off Kahala Ave. for reduced traffic volume, increased privacy, and yet immediate access to all that the neighborhood offers. About 500 steps out your front door is Kahala Beach. Neighboring that is the Waialae Country Club & Kahala Hotel. You’re also within a few minute’s drive of Kahala Mall (technically, walkable), Whole Foods, the Diamond Head farmer’s market, and all of Waikiki. From the home sellers: “With this house, I feel we’ve ascended (dare I say, transcended) the Luxury Home Trifecta: location, design, & privacy.”
Why did you build in Kahala?
“When even our penthouse on Ala Moana Blvd was just too noisy, we decided to build in an established neighborhood. But you really can’t deny that location is everything. Kahala provides idyllic access to the best of Honolulu.”
Mrs. W., home seller

Come Together
Hosting Guests? How many?
5? 10?? 50?!? 100?!?!?
Truly, you may never figure out how many people you can comfortably host here. The good news is, when the original owner-builders and their design team consulted catering chef, Ryan Covert, to plan the dueling kitchens, you can bet no one was thinking of solely small gatherings. What’s that? Did I mean to say dueling cooktops? No, darling, you heard me right. Dueling kitchens. They quite literally face-off. Both under roof, one is in the main house, the other is in the 1,438 ft2 pavilion…with barely a swimming pool separating them (if you retract the pocketing, floor-to-ceiling, teak-framed glass walls).

“Just when I think I have comprehended every aspect of what was built into this home, something new pops out to surprise me. I find that so charming to have all of the obvious gems and a bunch of Easter eggs, too.”

When the band has finished playing, your extravagant garden party guests have gone their various ways, followed closely by the catering staff, and you’re left with yet another set of great memories, let your 32-zone streaming service provide the right soundtrack to reminisce by. Or, kick back in your media room and let your favorite team do the entertaining for a while. And when the Hawaiian sun sets at 7pm, stay where you are and ask your sweetheart to be your pillow while you Netflix®-n-chill.

Balinese Hand-Carved Teak
Throughout the home you will discover over $41K of imported, solid teak. Much of it has been custom hand-carved by traditional Balinese artisans prior to export.
Sustainably Sourced
3 grades of teak were used to create the warm, tropical feel of this home. These triple baseboards, in addition to being special for their beautiful complexity, are reclaimed old-growth teak.
Art
In addition to its usefulness in adorning functional structures, sometimes you just have to hang it because…art.
Solid Teak Cabinetry
Teak is hardwood [Janka test: 3,540 lbf (15,700 N)] and naturally resistant to degradation and pests because of its high oil & silica content. Much of the cabinetry in the home is made of solid teak.
Teak + Leather
They say freshly milled teak has the smell of leather so it probably shouldn’t surprise us that they look so terrific together. But it did…in the best way.
Granite Kitchen Countertops
Ogee edged stone is a classic look that evokes the ornate elegance of other eras. This kitchen foregoes the more modern laminated designs for a sleek, historic look.
Marble Bath Countertops
In several intelligent places (always away from even mild acids) you’ll find marble. This handsome devil is in what we’ve nicknamed the “His Owner’s Suite” bath. It’s subtly echoed in the shower niches.
8′ Pool + Travertine Decking
The deep box travertine decking around the “lazy L” pool looks very modern against the standard pool bottom. Kids of all ages will still love the “drop-off” to the hopper.
Raw, Hand-hewn Travertine Tiles
Did you know travertine came in so many colors and shades? We love the ruggedness of the raw stone edges.
Travertine Flooring
Second only to teak, travertine abounds here. Look, we’re not saying they had to mine the Colosseum for it, but we do believe it looks as impressive here as it does there.
Security
From the front gate to panic room to the back perimeter wall, cc cameras are watching. Intercoms, motion detection, and a fire detection system round out this high-tech smart home.
Climate Control
The battalion of Daikin mini-split air conditioners, hidden from view between the 2 buildings that comprise this home, cool the rooms in zones for great efficiency with minimal energy use/loss.
Touchscreen Global Control
OK, OK, relax. We’re not talking about world domination. But, when you have control of everything from lights to waterfalls to pool temperature via AMX touchscreens in every room, we won’t be too surprised if you find yourself uttering, “Release the hounds!”
Panic Room
Fireproof, biometrically locked 6-hr door, hardwired with security surveillance camera and a land line (phone), this priceless security feature (located in the “Her Owner’s Suite”) lends peace of mind so rarely found in homes that it alone makes owning this property worth every penny.
6-Hour Door
Typically only found on vaults, the home builder reports the panic room door has been rated as fireproof for 6-hours. Additionally is has a biometrically-activated electromagnetic lock embedded in the door frame, and as you see here, hidden hinges making it virtually impossible to break in.
Seven (7) Refrigerators
These 2 refrigerator drawers in the main kitchen are convenient, but if you need more space there are also 2 full size Sub-Zeros®, a glass-front chef’s catering fridge, a 150-bottle wine fridge, and more. And did we mention the wine chiller and ice maker? I know, right?
Top-Shelf Appliances & Electronics
You know the names Wolf® and SubZero®. They’re here. What more can we say?
Fine Fixtures
Do you like pretty things? We do too. We found the unique fixtures scattered appropriately around the home very memorable because of their unexpected, distinctive, retro-mod qualities. Does this handheld shower wand remind anyone else of an old desktop phone? So charming.
Jacuzzi® Soaking Tub
Perhaps the first and last name in jetted tubs, this Jacuzzi® tub in the “Her’s Owner’s Suite Spa” has (reportedly) never been used. Don’t worry, it did pass professional plumbing inspection, so it works. Will you be the first to relax in it?
Parking, Parking, for Everyone
Both outside the teak-inlaid gates in the semicircular driveway and inside down the long drive and into the carport, the total number of parking spots is 11. Now that truly is breathtaking.
Dueling Waterfalls
Well, maybe not dueling exactly since one is in the backyard and the other in the front. , these waterfalls are at once controlled by the AMX global touchscreen system located throughout the home.
Hidden Pantry
Of the 65 kitchen cabinets, this may be the largest, yet it glides in and out with the slightest effort.
Putting Green
In a very private, shaded backyard with dappled sunlight at best, lawns struggle. Smartly, the home builders put in a feature that is reminiscent of lawn but far more useful, esp. considering Waialae Country Club is almost across the street.
Solid Teak Entry
This hand-carved, custom-designed 9-ft tall art installation, that doubles as a secure front door, is one of a kind and definitively says, “You have arrived.”
Makeup Refrigerator
Perhaps the only refrigerator of the 7 that isn’t designated for food, this under-counter makeup fridge will keep your essential oils fresh, your skincare products functional, and no one is going to stop you from chilling a few bottles of spring water. Skin needs hydration, amirite?
