Crescendo of Light & Life
Now called Akuahā, one of many meanings being, “the backbone of a mountain to/from which all rivers flow,” this eco-village retreat follows the legacy started by the MacKenzie Family, the owners who built the home currently on the land. For decades, it has been — and continues to be — a gorgeous and cherished space for community gatherings, sharing, and celebrations of all kinds.
Living on this 6.3 acres of land, permanently or temporarily, is both invigorating and relaxing/restorative…you’ll see. The surrounding forests and slopes of Mauna Loa are sources of daily treats including songbirds, our resident ‘Io (Hawaiian hawk), sunshine, Lilinoe (rolling mists), rain, and spectacular rainbows.
In the main home, large picture windows draw you into the embrace of the rainforest around you. Just before sunset — Lilinoe, a soft, low mist rolls in through the treetops. She is fleeting but a truly magical sight. And before you know it, she’s blown through leaving a clear and brilliant night with the Milky Way as one of the many easily-seen astronomical wonders directly overhead — while thousands of twinkling stars blanket the sky.

l‘Atelier d‘Artiste
Originally designed as a workshop that felt like an alternative to using the garage, this space has been converted into an atelier for the current owners. A 3-pc bath was added (no tub). The original cedar walls remain and the floors were updated to a dramatic zebra wood laminate. While not an entirely glass box, you’ll notice that the sheer number of windows and added French doors make the space feel large and breezy. We popped a bed in for napping, though the room is not technically a bedroom.

- Shared lanai with 3-pc bathroom:
- Single vanity

Deep History
Design-built in 1963 by long time local family, the MacKenzies, this home has warm, vibrant European cedar walls virtually throughout.

Organization Abounds
One of many benefits in a custom-designed home is the addition of multi-functional built-ins like this window seat with storage cubby.

Antiques
Whether or not you collect antiques yourself, we trust you’ll love the wood burning range that still stands in the kitchen.

Be cool
We’ve converted the pool into an ambient-temperature salt-water plunge. Perfect after a dry (or steam) sauna.

Solid as a rock
Stone is reliable. Granite is both reliable and beautiful. It’s what kitchen islands were made for.

Dual Fireplaces
Moving to Hawaii doesn’t have to mean giving up the coziness of a warm winter fire. Here you can have 2. One each in the living and dining rooms.

Don't be knotty
Solid oak hardwood floors look rustic because they are, yet they have the ability to be refinished many times.

Quadruple Delivery + unique tub
Some say the owner’s suite’s 4 showerheads are overkill. Some also say that sharks don’t get cancer. Probably the same “some.” 😉

What's old is new again
Who will deny the charms of a 1960s, Regency Blue, Dresslyn Lavatory from American Standard with matching toilet and tub? You’ll find the same in Manchu Yellow upstairs.

in situ
The solid Japanese redwood (Cryptomeria japonica) dining table seats 12+2 comfortably and is so solid that had to be constructed in place.

now that's hot
If heart health & mobility interest you, you’ll find the dry sauna a welcome addition to your routine.

+ 60%
Upcycling fish poop into a 60% better crop yield is both smart and eco-friendly. Food security sounds great, huh?

18K Gallons
Legit rainforst benefit = full independence. Your cisterns hold enough water to sustain a typical 4-person family for 6 weeks. Plus, it routinely refills itself for FREE!

Sustainability First
SunPower PV ranks #1 for efficiency and best-of-the-best solar for home installation.

Let the sun shine
Leased SunPower® solar panels paired with THREE SunPower® inverters deliver on-demand energy when the sun shines. Bonus: it’s net-metered.

IMPROV ON A THEME
Local artist & craftsman, Frederick Grissom, designed & laid a living room tile mosaic based on a very ancient theme – concentric circles – with its history & juju intact.

MODERN IN PLACES
In addition to the old schoolhouse charms and 1960s original moments, modern touches are not at all uncommon. (see below)

ARTFUL
The owner’s bath is a study in art and architecture. From the art glass basins to the unique miniature swimming pool-esque tub.

LOW-IMPACT DESIGN
Respecting Mother Earth brings benefits untold. Not capping her in concrete, when possible, shows that respect.

RUSTIC, NOT RUSTY
Rust-colored raw brick is a welcomed design element few will dispute, esp. when surface aging appears but no structural weakness does.

A Look Outside
Aquaponics. Food forestry. Petscaping. Indoor/outdoor living. Low impact design. Natural hydrology.
Have you been or are you being called to a more connected way of life? Does sustainable, modern homesteading sound like such a welcomed relief from the sickness of commercial agribusiness? Well, treat yourself to a huge head start.
Botanical diversity — spanning continents and cultures — flourishes on this land, a land recognized as sacred for generations of native Hawaiians. A mature bigleaf maple tree (Acer macrophyllum) in the front yard was gifted to the MacKenzies — by a friend’s father, 60 years ago — as a seed from Chicago. A majestic Redwood tree grows beside the maple. Japanese maple trees, cypress trees, a stunning array of jurassic Hāpu’u ferns (Cibotium menziesii), and prolific, the ʻōhiʻa trees (Metrosideros polymorpha) — with their vibrant lehua blossoms — fill the landscape with exquisite scents and a rainbow of color. You are most assuredly enfolded by nature, in all of its wonder, by this rainforest retreat.
And food? From the two-year-old, new orchard to Mother Nature’s full-grown volunteer ginger/pears/blackberries to the fully-functioning aquaponic growing beds, Hawaii’s flora and fauna are your willing partners in growing your own food. Want a few goats or chickens? How does 6+ acres of land sound as a playground for their healthy, happy lives? Here’s a quick look at what you’ll be growing in your private orchard:

[Open the Full HD Gallery above to see the image at full resolution.]
Permaculture grapevine coplantings with the new trees will 1) provide you grapes and, even better, 2) attract insects that eat other insects and therefore protect your developing fruit trees. If you find any ripe fruit when you visit, please, grab a snack to take with you as you ponder your life here and the bounty that awaits you. [Hint: It’s August, the pears and blackberries are fruiting.]

The Yin Yurt
The Yang Yurt
The Healing Yurt
We’ve established these yurts as places of community, education, and eco-retreat…not in the business sense, but you certainly could. The regular gathering of neighbors and Volcano Villag-ers has become a community mainstay. One that is waiting to see if you’ll continue the tradition. Here is a short list of reasons we poured concrete foundations for and built these yurts:
The Yin Yurt: Basically it’s for “glamping.” When family and friends converge on this wonderful gathering place, to celebrate a harvest, birthday, or anything really, we’ve set up 9 real beds on the hardwood flooring of this glamorous “tent.”
The Yang Yurt: From yoga to dance to guided meditations, we’ve hosted sensei, masters, gurus, yogis, sages, maestros, and even a few prima donnas who’ve been willing and able to lead those wishing to elevate themselves with new, expansive experiences and impromptu classes.
The Healing Yurt: Local healing practitioners have provided a wide variety of treatments, many of which are widely known, and some of which are integral to Hawaiian culture. We’ve had licensed massage therapist, reki masters, and others routinely administer physical, spiritual, emotional, and psychological healing (or just a quick tune-up) to those who need it.
